SUMMARY

His name was Duan Ling. He used to be nothing more than an illegitimate child with humble beginnings. As a child he had his fill of neglect and torment until a mysterious man named Lang Junxia took him away from the Duans. Lang Junxia fed him, put him in school, and made him a new home. Lang Junxia told him that when the peach trees blossom his dad would come get him. Then his dad really did come. He was far more impressive than Duan Ling imagined, far more dashing, far more omnipotent. It turned out that Duan Ling wasn’t a bastard whose paternal lineage was in question after all. In his veins flowed the most noble Han imperial blood, and the empire was supposed to belong to him.But in troubled times, with the beacons of war lit in all four corners of the world, his dad said everyone had a destiny that befit them, and their destiny was the way of benevolent rule, that was why they could never remain content with their little corner of he world. They were destined … to carry the enmity of an invaded empire, to bear the pain of losing their homeland; to live as the self required.

CHARACTERS

the character list may contain spoilers but foxghost said they tried to make the list spoiler free as much as possible but still if you haven't read the novel, read at your own risk. credits to foxghost for the character list

Main Characters

Duan Ling / 段嶺:
An illegitimate child living in the Duan household in Runan, Shangzi. Ling is the character “mountain range”. Age 8 at the beginning of the story. Birthday is 6th day of the 12th lunar month.

Wu Du / 武獨:
An assassin working under Zhao Kui. A white tiger tattoo is on his neck. Wu is the wu in wuxia, while Du means alone. By one calculation Wu Du is probably 19 at the youngest in the beginning of the story, assuming that he just started working for Zhao Kui. By another calculation, according to his own word and not Xunchun’s, he was 16.

Other Characters

Li Jianhong / 李漸鴻:The Prince of Beiliang (alternatively, Prince Beiliang), third prince of Chen. The characters are chosen for sounding grand while using the water radical. Age 24 at the beginning of the story. Sword: Zhenshanhe.
Duan Xiaowan / 段小婉:Duan Ling’s mother.
Lang Junxia / 郎俊俠:The mysterious man who came to get Duan Ling. His name is made up of the words man-handsome-hero. Which, I’m not disagreeing but I guess if I have to walk around with that I’d also go with “Nameless One”. Age 27 at the beginning of the story. His fandom nickname is 郎君/Langjun, which means “husband”.
Ding Zhi / 丁芝:A courtesan who works at the Viburnum. Her name is a kind of flowering weed. (All the women at the Viburnum has flower themed names.) Alternatively, 芝芝花 is a kind of gardenia.
Zhao Kui / 趙奎:Grand Marshal of the Chen Imperial Army. The name is a constellation.
Mu Kuangda / 牧曠達:Grand Chancellor of Chen. Mu means “shepard” while Kuangda can mean “philosophical” or having a broad, big picture view of things.
Chang Liujun / 昌流君:An assassin working under Mu Kuangda. Always masked. His name seems intentionally meaningless.
Cai Yan / 蔡閆:A boy a little older than Duan Ling who goes to the same academy. Younger brother of Cai Wen. If you read that Yan as the simplified version of 閻, it’ll mean Yama king of hell, but if you read it as itself, it’s just a last name and doesn’t really mean anything.
Cai Wen / 蔡聞:Guard captain of Shangjing. (His title is fictional; I’ve looked in all my historic dynastic dictionaries.) Ding Zhi’s friend.
Borjigin Batu / 布兒赤金拔都:The kid at school that Duan Ling got into a fight with before he even started school. His name is based on Batu of the House of Borjigin, or Batu Khan, ruler and founder of the golden horde.
Han Jieli / 韓捷禮:The kid Duan Ling’s supposed to go see if he’s ever bullied.
Helian Bo / 赫連博:The boy with a stutter who was wrestling with Batu in Chapter 3. Of Tangut origin.
Yelü Dashi / 耶律大石:The Northern Prince, or the “Prince of the Northern Administration”, was actually the marshal of the Liao armies. Yelü is the last name of the Liao ruling family.
Xunchun / 尋春:The proprietor of the Viburnum, often referred to as “the madam”. Think mamasan. Her name means “searching for spring.”
Master Kongming / 空明法師:A Bhuddist monk.
Helian Luan / 赫連欒:Helian Bo’s father, a member of the Xiqiang royal family.
Nayantuo / 那延陀:Formerly the best swordsman of Xiyu. Attempted to assassinate Li Jianhong and was killed instead.
Jebe / 哲別:One of the most famous generals under Genghis Khan.
Borjigin Jochi / 布兒赤金奇赤:Borjigin Jochi, Batu’s father. The name historically belonged to Borjigin Batu’s father, but FTYX spelled it 奇赤 “Jichi” instead of 術赤 “Shuchi”. I went with the historic spelling.
Master Wangbei / 忘悲大師:Master Kongming’s teacher, after being wounded by Nayantuo, he passed the Duanchenyuan to Master Kongming.
Yelü Hongji / 耶律洪基:Emperor Daozong of Liao, Khitan name Chala, emperor of Liao as of book 1.
Qiu Jin / 邱槿, Qin Tang / 秦棠, Su Yuan 蘇鵑:Three of the “Gathering of Eight Immortals”, (Ding Zhi is also one) the famous courtesans of the Viburnum. As of the beginning of Book 1, Qin Tang and Su Yuan are both deceased.
Wuluohou Mu / 烏洛侯穆:Wuluohou is a royal surname; formerly a prince of Xianbei. Lang Junxia’s name before he was taken in by the Han.
Huyan Na / 呼延那, Xiao Rong / 蕭榮:Students of Biyong College.
Chang Pin / 長聘:Mu Kuangda’s top adviser and confidant, a literati. Lives in the Chancellor’s estate.
Li Yanqiu / 李衍秋:The fourth prince of Great Chen, Li Jianhong’s younger brother. His name means “abundant autumn”, Yan uses the water radical.
Mu Jinzhi / 牧錦之:Mu Kuangda’s younger sister, Li Yanqiu’s princess-consort as of book one.
Yelü Zongzhen / 耶律宗真:Emperor Xingzong of Liao, by the time Duan Ling was 13, Zongzhen was already the emperor, and only (approx) a couple of years older.
Xie You / 謝宥:The commander-in-chief of the Black Armours, the army stationed in Jiangzhou that has always only ever answered to the holder of the jade arc, the son of heaven, the heir-apparent.
Mu Qing / 牧磬:Mu Kuangda’s son, a couple of years (or so) younger than Duan Ling. His name is the name of an ancient percussion instrument. It can also mean “courteous”.
Princess Ruiping / 端平公主:Li Jianhong and Li Yanqiu’s younger sister.
Yao Fu / 姚復:The Marquess of Huaiyin.
Yao Zheng / 姚箏:Daughter of Marquess of Huaiyin and Princess Ruiping, bestowed the title Princess Congping. “Zheng” is a kind of stringed instrument like a zither.
Li Rong / 李榮:Cai Yan’s new name. “Rong” means glory.
He / 鶴:Wu Du’s shishu, a master of poisons.
Su Fa / 蘇閥:Minster of Revenue. Su is one of the three major clans of Jiangzhou. Li Yanqiu intends to form a marriage alliance between the Su and Li family by marrying Su Fa’s daughter to the crown prince.
Bian Lingbai / 邊令白:Pacification Commission of Guanxi, stationed in Tongguan. Pledged his allegiance to Zhao Kui in the ousting of Li Jianhong and all the way up to the end of the civil war. Made his name during the Liao-Chen war when Shangzi fell to Liao and was made Commander-in-Chief of Shandong.
Zhao Pu / 趙埔:Zhao Kui’s brother, killed by pirates with an arrow 3 years before the siege of Shangjing.
Zhao Rong / 趙融:Zhao Pu’s son, Zhao Kui’s nephew. Captured and drowned by pirates soon after his father. The “Rong” here means “in harmony”.
Bian Rong / 邊戎:The identity Bian Lingbai gave “Zhao Rong” during his stay in Tongguan; Bian Lingbai’s nephew. The “Rong” here means military.
Helan Jie / 賀蘭羯:An assassin from a Buddhist sect out of northern Liao, used to be a part of the Northern Temple. Took the Duanchenyuan from Master Kongming when he betrayed the sect. The surname Helan itself is Xianbei in origin. The Xianbei pronunciation is “Helai”.
Yao Jing / 姚靜:Marquee Yao’s niece, his younger brother’s daughter. Travelled to Tongguan to marry into a family in Xiliang for a marriage alliance between Xiliang and the Yaos of Huaiyin. The “Jing” in her name means quiet, or calm.
Helian Da / 赫連達:Helian Bo’s uncle, have close ties with the Han Weiyong faction of Liao.
Han Weiyong / 韓唯庸:Han Jieli’s father. The only Han working in the Liao Southern Administration. Rumoured to have an illicit relationship with Empress Xiao, Zongzhen’s mother.
Shang Leguan / 賞樂官:Son of the Xiliang Cavalier Attendant-in-ordinary, friends with Helian Bo.
Zheng Yan / 鄭彥:One of the four great assassins. Has close ties to the Marquess of Huaiyin, a personal friend of Li Yanqiu. Among the four assassins, Zheng Yan and Wu Du probably get along best; they’re likely around the same age. The sword he uses is Zidianjinmang.
Zheng Li / 鄭隸:“Li” as in “scribe”. The imperial appointed governor to Tongguan after Bian Lingbai’s death.
Wang An / 王安:A Vice General of Tongguan.
Xie Hao / 謝昊:Another Vice General of Tongguan, related (from the same clan but not too closely) to Xie You of the Black Armours in Jiangzhou.

Amga:Number One warrior of Yuan.
Khatanbaatar:Nayantuo’s last disciple. Currently a Mongolian envoy.

.A few things to note:• The border between Liao and Chen are nebulous. Think of Chen as having two northern borders, one at Huai river (the one drawn here) and one at Yubiguan that gets drawn by the mountains. The land between those borders belong to Liao, but the cities belong to Chen.• The great wall gates (the places that end in “guan”) are historic sites, but FTYX may have moved them.• Yubiguan does exist, but Joyful Reunion’s Yubiguan is just south of the Shangjing Road, past the great wall, and if you block it, Shangjing can only get reinforcements from the southwest. so that should put it just north of Beijing.• Some real places names were used and moved. I know it for Huaiyin for sure, but there may be others.• I’m not sure about the province boundaries, so I didn’t draw them. Provinces/prefecture names are in purple.• Real mountain range locations have been modified to fit the narrative.

Joyful Reunion takes place in an imaginary dynasty but it’s based on historical names and places. (I’ll add to this as more chapters are posted and more information is added, not in alphabetical order, but in order of information appearance.)Geography & politics:Map of China in the year 1111. The Song empire is good proxy for Southern Chen.Administrative regions of the Liao dynasty• Xianbei Mountains, located (probably) in the Greater Khingan Range.• Battle of Huai River: the battle in which the Chen empire lost, that pushed the Chen border from Yubiguan all the way south to the current border. (It’s only called “Southern Chen” because they lost the north)• The text refers to the southern areas as Yangzhou, Jingzhou and Jiaozhou, in addition to Xichuan. That would correspond the the Eastern Han map of the provinces. (Jiaozhou taking the bottom third of the Southern Chen map, then cut the top part in thirds)• Xiqiang is in different parts of the text referenced as near Korea, but also northwest of Tongguan. Northwest of Tongguan would fit the Eastern Han location of Xiqiang.• The War of Chang Forest is recorded as happening 5 years before Duan Ling’s birth, but probably happened 11 years before Duan Ling’s birth. Lang Junxia was 8 at the time.Additional info:• The poem on the cover of Book 1, Joyful Reunion, by Li Yu.Another poem with the same name attributed to Li Yu.Preface to a Spring Evening Banquet in a Peach Garden by Li Bai, quoted in chapter 1 and many other places, about the transient, ever-changing nature of life.Immortals at the Magpie Bridge, by Qin Guan; the ending poem for Book 1.source: foxghost

Feitian Yexiang is a Chinese webnovel author and scriptwriter who also goes by the pseudonyms Gu Xuerou, Zhu Feng Tian Di and Lian Qing Feng (though he hasn't officially confirmed that these are his pseudonyms). In the fandom, however, he is often called variations of the nickname "chicken", and would refer to himself as "hen". An explanation by the Chinese fandom member and Twitter user @ForRobin_ regarding Feitian's wholehearted embrace of being a chicken has been thus:A Chinese novelist named Qian Zhongshu wrote, "If you eat an egg and feel it was delicious, why would you need to know the hen that laid the egg?" Feitian wrote a similar sentence in his introduction. "When eating an egg, please don't get too interested in the hen. If you like it, the hen expresses his sincere happiness and gratitude. If you hate it,please don't hate the hen. The hen can only apologize."Weibo, JJWXC User Account— source: chicken gegeFei Tian Yexiang has been writing novels in Jinjiang since 2008.
